From bringing characters to life on screen, producing, coaching, and directing, Angela Gibbs has become a staple in the entertainment industry with a career spanning over five decades. Gibbs was a regular on ABC’s comedy series Not Dead Yet, opposite Gina Rodriguez. In that series, Gibbs played Cricket, Nell’s beautiful and free-spirited friend. Gibbs is also often recognized for her role in the award-winning and critically acclaimed HBO Max series Hacks and is a standout as Robin, Marcus' mother who has a very close relationship with her son. Additional credits for Gibbs include Finding Happy, Adult Swim’s Black Jesus, On My Block (Netflix), This Is Us (NBC), and Bones. Film credits include Straight Outta Compton (Universal Pictures), Stone Cold Christmas (Bounce TV), Think Like a Man (Screen Gems) – to name a few.
While working on screen as an actor Gibbs keeps busy, as a mentor and guide to up and coming actors, coaching them over the years. She worked with director Alejandro Iñárritu on his films Birdman and The Revenant, which both went on to receive multiple Academy Awards wins and nominations. Gibbs has also coached newcomers such as Demetrius Shipp for the role of Tupac in All Eyes On Me, Richie Merritt in White Boy Rick, Ismael Cruz Cordova in The Undoing, and Janelle Monáe in Homecoming and Antebellum. Up next, Gibbs coached on the Lionsgate’s upcoming biopic Michael, starring Jafaar Jackson, directed by Antoine Fuqua, and produced by Graham King. She also worked on the Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar much anticipated Untitled Production that will be released on July 4th 2025.
Gibbs attended NYU’s Film Boot Camp and became a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute, where she won the Mary Pickford scholarship. While attending the American Film Institute, Gibbs cast the short film, “Last Breeze of Summer,” that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Short Film. Additionally, she received AFI's Mary Pickford Award for directing. Her short film, “Ties That Bind,” won the HBO Shorts Award and was featured during BET's Best Short series and won Best Short at the prestigious Pan African Film Festival. Gibbs also wrote for the Trumpet Awards for a decade and has taught at Spelman College in their Drama Department. She is the daughter of the legendary Marla Gibbs who starred on the iconic series “The Jeffersons”.
